Detention Center to offer Inmate Educational Program
The Hempstead County Detention Center Providing Adult Education Classes to Inmates.
The Hempstead County Detention Center in Partnership with UAHT and the Adult Education Center obtained a grant to hire a certified teacher who will conduct classes four days a week at the Detention Center, for inmates who want to obtain their General Education Diploma.
Classes began this week with three inmates taking advantage of the program. The class is limited to four students at a time due to available space. The classes are taught in a small holding cell in the booking area of the jail.
The inmates go through a screening process to see what education level they have, which is determined by testing. Once the inmate’s education level is determined they are placed in the class, to learn, prepare and study to take the final test.
